Immigrate to Canada from the United States

Many people in the United States, including US citizens and H-1B and other visa holders, move to Canada for permanent residence, healthcare and stability. US work experience and strong English results often lead to competitive Express Entry profiles.

What applicants from the United States should know

  • US citizens do not need a visa or an eTA to visit Canada, and can often apply for work permits at the border.
  • US and Mexican citizens may qualify for CUSMA professional work permits without an LMIA.
  • H-1B and other US visa holders can apply to Express Entry from the US. US work experience counts as foreign skilled experience.
  • Police certificate: an FBI Identity History Summary, plus certificates from other countries where you lived six months or more.
  • A DUI or other conviction can make you inadmissible to Canada. Check this before you travel or apply.
