Time abroad can also count if you were with a Canadian citizen spouse, partner or parent, or working full time abroad for a Canadian business or the Canadian public service. This calculator does not include those exceptions.
Frequently asked questions
Read the full guide: PR card renewal and the residency obligation.
What is the PR residency obligation?
Permanent residents must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (two years) in every five-year period. The days do not need to be continuous.
Do the days I leave and return count?
Yes. Any day you spend part of in Canada counts as a day in Canada.
What if I have been a PR for less than five years?
You must be able to reach 730 days by your fifth anniversary as a permanent resident. The calculator shows how many days you still need.
What happens if I do not meet it?
You can lose PR status after an officer’s decision, for example when you renew your PR card or apply for a travel document abroad. Humanitarian reasons and some exceptions can help, so get advice first.
