Express Entry changes on November 3, 2026: new CRS points for high-wage jobs
Since November 3, 2026, Express Entry gives up to 150 CRS points (140 with a spouse) through a new Labour Market Integration factor. You receive the higher of two options: your Canadian work experience points plus 20, 40 or 70 extra points for at least 12 months in a high-wage occupation, or 50, 70 or 100 points for a qualifying job offer in a high-wage occupation. An LMIA is no longer required for a qualifying job offer.

Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades candidates must show settlement funds based on family size: $15,263 for one person, $19,001 for two, $23,360 for three and $28,362 for four (amounts in effect since July 7, 2025). Canadian Experience Class candidates, and candidates authorized to work in Canada with a valid job offer, do not need to show these funds.
Basahin ang gabayHow to improve your CRS score: 9 proven ways
The biggest CRS gains usually come from a provincial nomination (600 points), higher language scores (reaching CLB 9 unlocks transferability points), French (up to 50 extra points), and since November 3, 2026, Canadian experience or a job offer in a high-wage occupation (up to 100 or more points).
Basahin ang gabayIRCC processing times explained: how long your application will take
IRCC posts two kinds of timelines: service standards (its target, met for 80% of complete files) and current processing times (how long recent files actually took). For example, the service standard is 6 months for Express Entry and 12 months for spousal sponsorship from outside Canada. Real times move every week, so always check IRCC’s processing times tool before you plan.

CUSMA (USMCA) professional work permit for US and Mexican citizens
US and Mexican citizens with a Canadian job offer in one of the professions listed in CUSMA, and with the required degree or credentials, can get an LMIA-exempt work permit. US citizens can often apply at a port of entry. The permit can lead to permanent residence through Express Entry after Canadian work experience.
Basahin ang gabayLMIA for Ontario employers: how to hire a foreign worker in 2026
To hire most foreign workers, an Ontario employer needs a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). Jobs paying $36.92 an hour or more in Ontario go through the high-wage stream; lower-paid jobs go through the low-wage stream, which ESDC generally refuses to process in cities like Toronto where unemployment is 6% or higher.

PR card renewal and the residency obligation (730 days)
To keep permanent resident status you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (two years) in every five-year period. The days do not need to be continuous. You can renew your PR card when it expires within nine months, or if it has already expired, as long as you meet the residency obligation.
Basahin ang gabayYour permit expired? Restoration of status in Canada (90 days)
If your temporary status in Canada expired less than 90 days ago, you may be able to apply to restore it. You must still meet the requirements of the status you want, explain why it expired, apply from inside Canada and pay the restoration fee plus the permit fee. You cannot work or study until restoration is approved.
Basahin ang gabayDUI and criminal inadmissibility: can I enter Canada?
Yes, a DUI (impaired driving) conviction can make you inadmissible to Canada, and since December 18, 2018 it is treated as serious criminality. You may overcome it with criminal rehabilitation once five years have passed since you completed your sentence, or with a temporary resident permit if you have a justified reason to travel sooner.
Basahin ang gabayHumanitarian and compassionate (H&C) applications in Canada
A humanitarian and compassionate (H&C) application asks IRCC to grant permanent residence to someone who does not fit a regular program, because of their ties to Canada, the best interests of a child, or the hardship they would face if they had to leave. It is a discretionary, exceptional remedy, so evidence is everything.
